Black people in America with guns gets an extremely bad rep. We're able to take the information and knowledge we have and not only educate young men and help them out, but change the narrative at the same time.

You don't have to be what the world tells you that you're gonna be. I was supposed to be, by eighteen, either in prison or dead. That's what the environment said. And guns were a particular issue, because of the lack of knowledge and information and education around them. So, oddly enough, the first time I got with a gun by myself, I was around thirteen years old. And because of the different environmental factors, and a lot of mental health issues that were occurring at thirteen, which I didn't know about at the time— we didn't talk a lot about mental health 32, 33 years ago— first thing I wanted to do was kill myself. So I tried to commit suicide the first time I picked up a gun and was unmonitored by any adult. Just didn't know how to make the thing go off. I didn't know what the safety was, and it was on. I couldn't get the trigger to go back. And then two years later, I tried again with a lever-action gun, and I didn't understand how to get the lever to cock fully to get the gun in action. So after that, I realized that I was here for a purpose, and I was here for a reason. And the gun was the one thing that threatened me every day in my mind, that I thought was the way out, that was threatening my life and whatever God put me here to do. So I decided to take the power of the gun and turn it for good.

KEVIN DIXIE

Absolutely, because they can hear me talk about it, and if they respect me, if I've built that kind of relationship, they feel comfortable saying, "This is a problem for me. I wanna talk about it now," where I didn't have that outlet. And I want them to know that they have opportunities vastly beyond what I've ever done.
